Spanish verb ir: conjugation

 Spanish verbs index

The verb ir has a number of irregularities, and the peculiarity that its different forms are based on different stems:

  • the present tense is essentially based on the stem va-, with the irregular first person form voy;
  • the verb is rare in having an irregular imperfect tense form;
  • the verb is one of few to have an irregular present subjunctive, based on the stem va(y)-;
  • the preterite actually uses the forms of the verb ser.

As well as having a common meaning of to go, ir is a key verb because it can function as an auxiliary, being used to form the so-called periphrastic future. For example: voy a preguntar = I'll ask, I'm going to ask. Some commentators note that in everyday usage, this periphrastic future is at least as common, and possibly more common, than the future tense for expressing future actions.
